Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a motor neuron disease. The disease typically attacks both upper and lower motor neurons and causes degeneration throughout the brain and spinal cord. Peggy has familial ALS, which represents between 5 and 10 percent of all cases. The rest of the cases are referred to as spontaneous ALS since it can strike anyone, anytime.
